Fashion Lingo

While reading through our blog you might come across one or two foreign words you don't know so we've done our best to put together a little dictionary to help you understand just what we're going on about.

:: Coordi/Cordi/Co-ord ::

An abbreviation of 'co-ordination', it's a term used popularly amongst fashionista and just means 'oufit.' 


:: Chuusei / 中性 [Japanese] ::

An all inclusive term for those who identifies as non-binary, this includes agender, bigender, grey-gender and much more. 


:: Dansei / 男性 [Japanese] ::

A person who identifies as (trans) male.


:: Dansou (suru) / 男装(する) [Japanese] ::

Dansou is the action of a woman or gender neutral person* (male or female) dressing is male fashion with the intention of being seen and treated as a male.

The closest Western equivalent to dansou is Drag Kings, but in dansou there is no direct link between dansou and gender identity or sexuality, in other words, a straight cis-woman can still do dansou. 

That said for many dansou is a lifestyle as they do it everyday or at least an occasion source of security and confidence.

:: Josei / 女性 [Japanese] ::

A person who identifies as (trans) female.


:: Josou (suru) / 女装(する) [Japanese] ::

The same as dansou but when the person is dressing in female fashion. 


:: -kei / 系 [Japanese]::

Literally meaning 'system' this is a Japanese marker for styles and can be added on to basically anything key to a style. 

For example, pink-kei, literally 'pink style/system' would be an fashion/style/coordi based around the colour pink. 

There are many popular 'kei' terms used when talking about Japanese (street) fashion. 


:: MODE ::

A modern street style popularly worn in the Korean and less popuplarly in the Japanese alternative fashion scenes. The name 'MODE' comes from the French term 'Mode a la Mode'. 

It's a style based on avand garde runway fashion and the latest high fashion trends so it's often evolving and quite expensive. It's the 'high fashion' of the alternative fashion world.

:: Momzzang / 몸짱 [Korean] ::

Literally meaning 'best body', it's a title used to refer to someone who has a well toned and healthy physique, usually characterised by a slim, proportionate body. For men, they usually had toned muscles and women usually have hour-glass like figures. 

The word is also now loosely used with someone who appears to have these characteristics under their clothing (in other worse, their clothing style fits well and creates the illusion) as well as the person having a good style too. 


:: Mori(-kei) / 森系 or モリ系 [Japanese] ::

A street style originating from Japan charactised by earthy tones and materials. The style is supposed to look like the wearer is embodying Mother Nature or 'at one with nature', some would say that the wearers look like they came from/belong in the woods.

:: Namjang (hada) / 남장(하다) [Korean] ::

The Korean equivalent to dansou.


:: Pae-pi / 패피 [Korean] ::

An slang term made from the abbreviation of the phrase 'fashion people' (aka fashionista) in Korean. 


:: Ulzzang / 얼짱 [Korean] ::

Literally meaning 'best face', it's a title used to refer to someone whose natural features fit well within the Korean beauty standards, usually charactersided by a small face, large dolly eyes, a sharp v-line chin, clear pocalin skin and a young, youthful appearance. 

Nowadays there are many trends that ulzzang follow like aegyo sal and straight brows, but these are trends not requirements. Also, in the foreign ulzzang community the 'guidelines' for being considered Ulzzang are slightly different to better incompus the natural features of other races but they have not changed within Korea.

:: Yeojang (hada) / 여장(하다) [Korean] ::

The Korean equivalent to josou.
